1. TVS Apache RTR 200 4V

TVS Apache series is famous for its performance and handling. Even though the company had 160 and 180 series for a very long time, customers were waiting for a 200 cc performance bike from the Hosur manufacturer. Finally TVS revealed the new Apache RTR 200 4V couple of years ago with options like fuel injection, stickier Pirelli tyres and dual channel ABS options. The design of new Apache RTR 200 4V was completely different from the 160 and 180. TVS has given naked design theme for the new Apache with bigger headlamps which gets LED DRLs. The tank design is muscular with off-set placed fuel filler. The Hosur based manufacturer has given split seat for the new model with small LED tail lamps and new design for the grab rails. For the first time, TVS has given KYB mono-shocks at the rear which improved handling compared to the old RTR 180. The Apache also comes with clip on handle bars along with rear set foot pegs gives a sporty riding position. The instrument cluster is fully digital which is again a first for TVS and it comes with lots of information for the riders like top speed indicators, service reminder, gear position indicator and more.

TVS Apache RTR 200 4V is powered by 197.5 cc single cylinder engine producing 20.7 hp of power at 9,000 rpm and 18.1 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. This engine is mated to 5 speed gearbox. The fuel injected version produces 0.5 hp more power compared to carburettor version. The Apache RTR 400 4V comes with 270 mm disc brakes at front and 240 mm at rear. TVS has given dual channel ABS system as an option for the Apache and it is available only with carburettor. 2. Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS

Bajaj introduced Pulsar 200 NS as a successor the aging Pulsar 220. The design of 200 NS was completely different and in a league of its when compared to other Pulsar model till that date. The 200 NS was the cheaper alternative of the full blow KTM Duke 200 the bike which it is based on. Bajaj replaced the expensive parts of Duke 200 with alternative parts to make the Pulsar 200 NS affordable for the mass market. The Pulsar 200 NS is the first naked bike from Bajaj. 3. Bajaj Avenger 220 Street/Cruise

Bajaj Avenger series is one of the most affordable cruiser bikes in the country. The new generation of Avenger is available in two stylish versions – street is more sporty in appearance and Cruise is like a proper cruiser styling elements. Even both look different under the skin both are same bikes with different dress to appeal. The front gets round head lamps with long telescopic front suspension and raise handle bar with forward set foot pegs giving a proper cruiser type riding position for the Avenger. Bajaj has given water drop design for the fuel tank with long seats which is positioned lower on the bikes for long comfortable journey.

The rear design is simple like other cruiser bikes in higher segments. The Street get all black theme and it looks similar to Harley Davidson Street 750 while the Cruise gets chrome treat all around the body with spoke wheels. 4. Bajaj Pulsar 220 F

Bajaj Pulsar 220F was one of the most popular performance bikes in the country. When it was first introduced in India, the Pulsar 220 F brought so many segment first features with it like rear disc brakes, fuel injection, digital instrument cluster, projector headlamp, clip on handle bars and many more which made the 220F favourite among youngsters. Even though Bajaj introduced Pulsar 200 NS as the successor of 220, the demand of the old model was increasing and right now it is the best selling model in its segment. Recently Bajaj has given an update for 220 which include BSIV complaint engine and AHO. The design is one of the stand out feature of the Pulsar 220 even though it is around for almost 10 years now.

The blackened projector headlamps with tall visor give a sporty look for the Pulsar 220. The traditional muscular tank and the half fairing continue the sporty theme to the side also. 5. Yamaha FZ S

Yamaha FZ is the model which changed the fortunes for the company in India. Then the Japanese manufacturer introduced second generation of FZ-S years ago with new engines and updated design theme. Even though the basic design theme of FZ-S is similar to the first generation model, the bike still looks fresh and modern. The front get updated headlamp with a small visor on the top. The tank is muscular with new shround near the fuel tank improves the muscular look of FZ-S. For the new model, Yamaha has given split seats and the rear gets a new design but the tail lamp and indicators are carried over from the previous model.

Yamaha has given wide handle bar for the FZ-S with rear set foot pegs giving sporty riding position. The FZ-S comes with fully digital instrument cluster but misses out on dual odometer and gear position indicator. Yamaha has given beefier telescopic front suspension and mono shocks at rear which improves the handling of FZ-S. 6. Suzuki Gixxer/SF

Suzuki was struggling to crack the performance segment with their earlier models but the company final found gold with the Gixxer series. The Japanese manufacturer developed Gixxer series for youngsters and one of the important reasons for the success of Gixxer is its styling. Even though, design of Gixxer took some inspiration from successful FZ series from Yamaha. The smart looking head lamp with small visor gives a sporty look for Gixxer. Like most of the naked bikes, the tank design is muscular. Like FZ, Suzuki has also given wide single piece handlebar. The foot pegs are rear set with single piece seat gives a relaxed riding position for the Gixxer. The rear gets LED tail lamp with a large mud guard which will help the rider in rainy season.

The Gixxer comes with fully digital instrument cluster which has speedometer, odometer, time and other details in it. Suzuki has given 43 mm telescopic front suspension and mono suspension at the rear. The engineers have tuned suspension for good handling but it doesn’t affect the ride quality of the Gixxer also which is again one of its USP. After the success of naked version, Suzuki introduced a fully faired version of Gixxer which is christened as Gixxer SF. The only changes made for SF compared to regular model is new fairing which is developed in same wind tunnel with Suzuki Moto GP bike. The fairing design is similar to litre class bikes from Suzuki and increases the sporty appeal of the Gixxer. Suzuki has given 266 mm front disc and 220 mm rear disc which is optional. The Gixxer SF also comes with single channel ABS system. 7. Honda CB Hornet 160R

Honda is the second two wheeler manufacturer in India in sales. The Japanese manufacturer had success in entry level sports bike segment with Unicorn 160 but the company didn’t get the heart of youngsters with CB Dazzler or CB Unicorn models. The market feedback Honda got from potential customers is that they want a stylish entry level sports bike and the result is Hornet 160 R. Honda introduced CB Hornet 160R which focuses on style rather than performance and it became a huge success for the company. The headlamp design is aggressive with a small visor on top. The fuel tank is the main focus of design as it gets tank extensions to improve the muscular look of the Hornet. Honda has given single piece seat for the Hornet 160.

The Hornet 160 R comes with single piece handle bar along with rear set foot pegs for a sporty riding position. The best part of the design is the rear as it get X shape for LED tail lamps which increases the look of CB Hornet 160 R. Honda has given an all digital instrument cluster with lots of information for the rider like clock, odometer and etc. Honda has given Hazard lights for the Hornet but the company skips engine kill switch which is not even available on CBR model also. 8. Bajaj Pulsar 160 NS

Bajaj Pulsar 150 is the best selling entry level sports bike in India. But the company want to more youngsters to the portfolio and want something more sporty at the entry level to compete against new models. The Pulsar 160 NS was already launched in International markets and it was manufactured in India but the company didn’t introduce it even after so many spotting in Indian roads. Finally Bajaj introduced the Pulsar 160 NS in India last year. The new model is based on the powerful 200 NS and follows the same design theme of its big brother. Even in dimensions also both are same. Bajaj has given same perimeter frame for Pulsar 160 NS which gives its excellent handling compared to regular bikes.

The Pulsar 160 NS comes with clip on handle bars along with rear set foot pegs gives sporty riding position for the bike. The instrument cluster is a mix of digital and analog as the tachometer is analog while the rest of the console is digital. Bajaj has given telescopic front suspension and mono shocks at rear which will improve the handling along with perimeter frame. The Pulsar 160 NS is powered by 160.3 cc single cylinder DTS-I engine producing 15.3 hp of power at 8,500 rpm and 14.6 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. This engine is mated to 5 speed gearbox. The changes made for Pulsar 160 NS is in wheels and disc brakes. The front disc brake is 240 mm compared to 280 mm on the 200 NS and rear is 130 mm drum brake as the company is not offering rear disc brake on the 160 NS. 9. TVS Apache RTR 160 4V

TVS Apache RTR 160 is the entry level model of the Apache series. The model was waiting for an update for a long time and Finally TVS launched the updated Apache RTR 160 4V couple of months ago in India. Like Pulsar 160 NS which took its inspirations from big brother the Apache RTR 160 4V is inspired of Apache RTR 200 4V. The front gets same headlamp design from the bigger bike along with muscular tank gives the bike sporty feel. TVS has given single piece seat for the Apache RTR 160 4V instead of the split seats on the 200 4V. The rear gets LED tail lamp and ends on a high note. TVS has also given tyre hugger which will help the rider in monsoon.

The Apache RTR 160 4V also misses on clip on handle bar and instead TVS has given regular one piece handle bar but the foot pegs are rear set along with lower seats gives a sporty riding position for the new bike. Like the bigger brother, the 160 4V also comes with full digital instrument cluster with top speed recorder, lap time recorder and more. TVS Apache RTR 160 4V is powered by 159.7 cc single cylinder engine producing 16.1 hp of power at 8,000 rpm and 14.8 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. This engine is mated to 5 speed gearbox. 0-60 kph in 4.7 sec and top speed is 115 kph. Even though the bike is tuned for sporty riding, the Apache RTR 160 4V can return 44 kmpl and the fuel tank capacity is 12 litres. The braking duties are done by 270 mm front disc and 130 mm drum brake with option of disc brake. The front suspension is telescopic and the rear is mono shock just like the 200 4V. TVS Apache RTR 160 4V is available in 3 colours – Red, Black and Blue. The base variant of Apache RTR 160 4V is priced at 81,490 (Ex-Showroom) and TVS is offering two more variant in which one variant get rear disc and the second variant comes with fuel injection. 10. Honda XBlade

Honda XBlade is the latest entry on the 160 cc performance segment from the Japanese manufacturer. The XBlade is the third model based on the 160 cc platform and it sits between Hornet 160 and CB Unicorn. Even though mechanically it is similar to its siblings, the stand out feature is its styling which will turns head every where.

The XBlade is the first product in its segment to get full LED headlamp which looks really good and offers lots of light in night. The way front headlamp along with visor integration is stylish and the design is concentrated a lot in the fuel tank. Honda has given tank extensions to make the XBlade look more muscular than its competitors.

Honda has given single piece seat design for the XBlade in which the rider seat is positioned low and the pillion seat is taller but not tall like some performance bikes. The company has given lots of cuts and curves to make the XBlade look more sporty and aggressive. The rear gets new tail lamp which looks really good like the Hornet 160 R. Honda XBlade is powered by 162 cc single cylinder engine producing 13.93 hp of power at 8,500 rpm and 13.9 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. This engine is mated to 5 speed gearbox. The XBlade has a top speed of 118 kph and the bike can return 45 kmpl. Honda has given 12 litres of fuel tank capacity for the XBlade which is similar to its competitors in the segment. The braking power comes from 276 mm disc at the front and 130 mm drum at rear as Honda is not offering rear disc as an option or the combi-braking system. We can expect Honda to introduce rear disc brake along with combi-braking or ABS braking system at a later stage when the new law comes to effect next year.

The XBlade get telescopic front suspension and mono shocks at the rear. Honda has given 17 inch alloy wheels with 80/100 section tyre at the front and 130/70 section rear tyre. Honda XBlade is available in 5 colours – Pearl Spartan Red, Matte Frozen Silver, Matte Marshal Green, Matte Marvel Blue and Pearl Igneous Black.
