Bajaj Chetak 125 scooter planning launch in 2019

Bajaj Auto Limited is planning to bring back the country’s favourite two wheeler – the Chetak. It may be remembered that the Bajaj Chetak was a popular scooter during the period 1972-2006. It was so named after the legendary horse of Indian warrior Rana Pratap Singh and was looked upon as a top quality scooter, in an affordable price range and was lovingly called ‘Hamara Bajaj’.

Bajaj Auto was once the leader in the scooter segment, owning more than 50% market share. But, that is not the case today. Their market share today is about 15%. Experts believe that their market share has declined due to company’s decision of exiting scooter segment in 2009.

But that seems to be a thing of the past, if we are to believe a new report – which claims that Bajaj is all set to launch a new scooter next year and will be branding it as Chetak.

As per the report, the 2019 Bajaj Chetak in its new avatar will be positioned in the premium scooter segment and will take on the likes of the top variants of Honda Activa, Piaggio Vespa and Aprilia SR150. It will be launched sometime in 2019 in the 125cc segment and expected to be priced at around Rs 70,000. The report also adds that Bajaj will launch an electric version of Chetak, and call it Chetak Chic.

As per the leaked patent images, new Bajaj Chetak will be a unisex scooter targeting premium scooter buyers in the country. It will get a comfortable riding position, under seat storage, an upright handlebar, wide foot pegs and all digital console with Bluetooth connectivity.

It will also get a USB charging point, CBS brakes, large fuel tank and oval shaped headlamps. It will see extensive use of chrome throughout its makeup adding a premium appeal with brushed aluminum grab rails.

Bajaj Chetak could be powered by a 125cc air cooled engine offering 9-10 bhp power and 9 Nm torque mated to a CVT. Suspension would include a single arm front suspension and monoshock at the rear while braking will be via drum brakes at both end with rear disc brake offered as an option.
