KSRTC buses also known as (“Aanavandi” ) in Malayalam is a common means of transport in the state , and also it will be hard to find out someone who has never used this public transport system at least once in their lives. But it is also a fact that KSRTC is always a subject for news also for the last many years and the recent negative news items coming out from various parts of the state is giving a bad touch to this public transport system again.

The death of Sadashivan a KSRTC driver as he was attacked by two people alleging that the bus which was driven by Sadashivan hit the bike of the two at Angamaly in Eranakulam has shocked everyone in the state. But this incident was actually not the first time where KSRTC employees or passengers are attacked inside bus depots or inside buses.

Months back also similar news came out as when a couple was attacked inside the KSRTC bus at Muvattupuzha. What’s more just two days after the death of a KSRTC driver at Angamalay an almost similar incident has happened in the Trivandrum city also.

But why Do such incidents occur frequently?

It is clear that lack of security at bus depots is the main reason for the recurring incidents like these. It seems that it will be difficult for KSRTC to appoint police officials in each bus running to various routes, but as a place where lakhs of passengers are using KSRTC it is high time that the security at main depots in each district is strengthened.

According to police sources it is the KSRTC that should submit a report to police department if any depots in the state need more cops for security. But according to a police official who talked to EnteCity, even after all these incidents KSRTC management has not asked the police department for more cops at least during the peak hours in any depots.

K M Irshad Chief traffic manager (KSRTC) said to EnteCity that it is shocking that these type of incidents are regularly happening in the state. He added that the above statement by the police is baseless since earlier the aid post in the main depots had enough cops all the time. Later, the police department withdrew the cops due to several constraints.

As the blame game continues, it is the public and the employees who have to bear the brunt of such unpleasant situations like this. Let us hope that the authorities will soon take steps to safeguard the interests of the public as well as the KSRTC employees, so that such incidents do not happen in future.
