Tension prevailed in Vizhinjam on Friday night after a man misbehaved with a woman on a KSRTC bus coming from the city.
The police said the woman informed her relatives, who arrived at the KSRTC depot in Vizhinjam.
They manhandled the accused and handed him over to the police. Following this, a mob blocked the road and assembled in front of the Vizhinjam police station demanding action against the woman and her relatives for manhandling the accused.
The woman and her relatives are in the police station. The accused was shifted to the hospital, sources said.
A police team led by the Assistant Commissioner, Fort Sub-Division, rushed to the Vizhinjam police station with additional force and held talks with the two groups.
By 10 p.m., the situation was brought under control and those who assembled in front of the police station dispersed.
A top city police official said the priority was to ease tension. Cases will be registered against the relatives of woman, the accused, and the mob for unlawful assembly. The police have intensified the patrolling in the area, he added.
