The long-pending demand for a new KSRTC bus terminal-cum-shopping complex at Malappuram is to be addressed. Chief minister Oommen Chandy will lay the foundation stone for the new complex at Malappuram town on January 2.

The new bus terminal will come up at the site of Malappuram depot, which is now in a decayed condition. A two-storeyed building will be constructed as part of the first phase of the work and later it would be developed into a six-storeyed building on 2.4 acres.

Rs 7.9 crore has already been sanctioned for the project. Local MLA P Ubaidualla has informed that the construction of bus terminal would be completed by 18 months and that it would have the capacity to park around 50 buses at a time.

The project was announced almost four years ago, but the authorities had failed to start work on the project. The authorities had approved the revised project recently, but the project was delayed indefinitely. The Kerala transport development and finance corporation (KTDFC) is the implementing agency of the project.

An organizing committee for the smooth conduct of the foundation laying ceremony was constituted at Malappuram on Wednesday.

The chairman of Malapppuram municipality Perumbally Sayed, municipal councillors and KSRTC officials attended the meeting.
