Aimed at injecting a shot of professionalism into their operations, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and its subsidiary Kerala Urban Road Transport Corporation (KURTC) are gearing up to recruit management graduates to be posted in key roles.

This includes posts like administrative officer and assistant transport officer, from which managerial cadre begins in administrative and operational roles. “The RTC’s Board has already decided on this and the recruitment will begin once Assembly polls are over. Candidates will be shortlisted after interview, from a preliminary list of the Public Service Commission. The qualification is post graduation with experience. Those having management degree will be preferred,” said a senior KSRTC official.

The RTC began brainstorming about directly recruiting personnel into the management cadre after losses mounted due to mismanagement at different levels. So much so that many people who were promoted as executive directors heading different wings were either matriculates or had completed only pre-degree.

A thorough analysis will be done a few months after direct recruits are posted in managerial posts, comparing their accomplishments and that of those who were promoted to similar posts. “We need people with fresh and innovative ideas to change norms and practices that contributed to unscientific trip scheduling and decisions,” KSRTC officials said.

The situation is similar in the case of KURTC formed a year ago to operate and maintain the fleet of 720 low-floor buses procured under Centre’s JNNURM scheme. “The fleet of buses can be operated much more efficiently by adopting innovative practices, for which people in managerial positions must have a change of mindset,” they added.

Elaborating on problems facing the organisation, a senior official said financial and technical data had not been computerised. “This often leads to erroneous decision making, plunging the agency further into losses. The introduction of electronic ticketing machines has helped us know fare collection (revenue) details. But we are in the dark about many aspects of expenditure and technical data.”
