The state transport agency, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, plans to procure 500 brand new air-conditioned buses on rent. To be named ‘Shivshahi’, these new buses will be deployed on most of the routes on which airconditioned buses currently ply. This includes the Mumbai-Pune corridor, said sources.

The buses will comprise two types—45-seater air-conditioned ones and sleeper coach vehicles, the sources said. The sleeper-only vehicles will accommodate 30 passengers. To finalize the design and logo for these buses, the transport agency has invited the public to make suggestions. The best design will get cash rewards, according to a source.

The transport body also plans to induct its own super-luxury buses procured from Scania and 35 Volvo buses in the fleet for routes on which Shivneris currently ply. The corporation also plans to keep a check on speed of its air-conditioned buses as there have been complaints of overspeeding, the sources said.
