Harley Davidson rider lost in Yamuna after deadly DND crash

A motorcyclist riding his Harley-Davidson has been missing since early on Sunday morning after he was hit by a speeding car on the Delhi-Noida-Direct Flyway and was flung into the Yamuna by the powerful impact.

Rescue teams of the Delhi Fire Service and police along with divers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) carried out search operations after a passerby reported the accident.

“There was a loud sound after the red car hit the Harley-Davidson bike at very high speed on the DND flyway, Noida-Delhi side. The impact of the accident can be understood from the fact that the bike’s rear and the car’s front were completely damaged and the biker fell into the river,” said Ankush Kumar, a witness.

The driver of the car left it on the spot and fled.

“We have received information about an accident at Sunlight Colony police station. At the spot, we found a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with registration number DL8S CH 1887 and a red Toyota Etios car with registration number Dl9C AE 0946 were found in accidental conditions. So far, neither bike rider nor car driver have been traced so far,” said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP, south east district.

Since, eyewitnesses have claimed that the biker fell into the Yamuna river, we have been taking the help of local divers and team of NDRF in search operations.”

The accident took place at around 1 am on the DND, an eight-lane, 9.2-kilometre highway which crosses the Yamuna river and connects south Delhi to Noida. During investigation, police reached Sarita Vihar on the basis of the bike’s registration number.

It is registered in the name of Anshuman Puri, a resident of house number 92 in K-Block. “We found his house locked. When we asked about him, a neighbour told us that Puri lived alone,” Biswal said.

The car is registered in the name of Bhappa Singh, a resident of Qutub Vihar. His house was also found locked. Neighbours said Singh lived in Canada and his daughter and son-in-law were using the car.

“We are trying to trace their locations. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Sunlight Colony police station and further investigation is underway,” Biswal added.

“We are also investigating the fact that Puri was one of the members of an elite bikers group which every Sunday goes on long drives on stretches like Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway. They also take the Jaipur route through NH 8,” an officer said.
