First woman station master for KSRTC takes charge

Rohini K R, Kerala’s first woman station master, took charge at the KSRTC depot at Piravom on Monday.  “I am very happy to be the first woman to hold this position. Hope I will be able to give my best at the new job,” said Rohini.

She will work along with two other station masters, both men, at the depot. Before getting promoted, Rohini was a temporary station master at the Thodupuzha depot. Rohini has been working with the KSRTC as a conductor for the past 20 years.

She was one of the first three women conductors who got into the KSRTC through PSC recruitment. Her career with KSRTC started in 1997 as conductor at the Chengannur KSRTC depot.

“I started my career as a conductor at a time when the concept of women bus conductors was new to society. But, I continued as I had the responsibility to look after my family,” she said.

Rohini has chosen a 24-hour shift at her new work. “Initially, we planned not to give her the 24-hour shift. But, Rohini took it up as she thinks it is necessary to learn the nature of the work. We are happy to get a committed officer,” said Biji K K, Assistant Transport Officer.

Rohini is the mother of two girls. Her husband K R Suresh supports her wholeheartedly to share the responsibility of taking care of their schoolgoing children.
