Things to know before taking a heavy Driving Licence
A valid Driving License, issued under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, is an essential document to drive a motor vehicle in any public place in India. In the State of Kerala driving licenses are being issued by the Motor Vehicles Department through its 17 Regional and 42 Sub Regional Transport Offices. One should have proper authorization in the license to drive specific class/classes of vehicle he intends to drive.
- HMV – A Heavy Motor Vehicle License that allows you to drive heavy or low motor vehicle ‘Open License’. It is an All India Driving Permit for Cars and Trucks.

Heavy Motor Vehicle
- HGV: Heavy Good Vehicle
- HPV: Heavy Passenger Vehicle
- HTV: Heavy Transport Vehicle (Valid for Goods and Passenger Vehicles)
- HZRD: Heavy Transport Vehicle with Hazardous materials
- TR: Tractor
- RDRLR: Road Roller
Learning to drive a heavy vehicle on the road
Professional training can be provided by an accredited heavy vehicle training and testing provider, a driving school or your employer.
If you know a person with a heavy vehicle licence, that person is allowed to help with your training, as long as that person has a current Indian licence for the type of vehicle that you are learning to drive.
