Rail fans celebrate 39th anniversary of Vaigai Express launch

MADURAI: A team of rail fans on Monday celebrated the 39th anniversary of the launch of Nos 12635/12636 Madurai – Chennai Egmore – Madurai Vaigai Superfast Express trains. The Vaigai Express was launched on August 15, 1977.

“Among the trains, Vaigai Express is our favourite because it was one of the fastest modes of travel between Chennai and Madurai before road transport evolved,” said M Arun Pandian, a software professional from Bangalore and ardent rail fan.

Arun and others arrived here on Sunday night. On Monday morning, the team decorated the locomotive of Madurai – Chennai Vaigai Superfast Express before the train departed around 7am. They honoured the loco staff with garlands and presented mementos to them.

Followed by the function, the team travelled in the same train up to Viluppuram where they got down. From Viluppuram, they will travel back to Madurai on the Chennai Egmore – Madurai Vaigai Express. There will be a cake cutting ceremony when the train reaches Madurai Junction after 9pm.

During the cake cutting ceremony, the rail fans are also planning to honour retired running staff of Vaigai Express as a token of gratitude. “We keep demanding so many trains and amenities from railways every time. Why don’t we celebrate what we have at hand,” Arun asked.
