Private bus driver fined and register case for blocking ambulance in Paliyekkara Toll Plaza, Thrissur

The Motor Vehicles Department authorities have taken action against a private bus driver who jumped the lane and blocked the way of an ambulance at the Paliyekkara toll booth in the district on Wednesday.

Enforcement Regional Transport Officer, Thissur, Shaji Madhavan, who witnessed the incident, directed action against Jayadevan Krishnan, driver of the private bus Kuyilan that conduct service on the Thrissur-Varanthirappilly route.

The bus jumped the lane and used the emergency lane meant for ambulance and other emergency services.

A fine of ₹10,000 was slapped on him and he was sent for a traffic rule awareness class.

Anyone blocking an ambulance with their car will now have to think twice before doing it. Because under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill that has been approved by the government, there will be a Rs 10,000 fine for not giving way to emergency vehicles.

The Motor Vehicle Act comes with many changes, including a higher fine for drunk driving, but one of the most notable changes to the act has been increasing the penalty for not giving way to an ambulance on the road to Rs 10,000.

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 also seeks to increase the time limit for renewal of driving licence from one month to one year before and after the date. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, which had been passed by the Lok Sabha, was introduced in the Upper House in April 2017 but was referred to a select panel.

After taking into account the panel’s recommendation, the Bill was re-introduced in the Rajya Sabha but the debate on the bill remained inconclusive.
