chapter to the achievements of women was added to the Railways on Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway when Ms.Suman Lakda from Ranchi has created history by becoming the first woman to drive a goods train.

Suman has become the first assistant Loco Pilot in Railways department. She drove on the route from Chakradharpur to Tatanagar. She flared the green flag at around 2:10 in the afternoon which signaled the start of the journey.

Many other women are taking training for Loco Pilot in the Chakradharpur railway department. Saban Surin, Divya Anand, Savita Kindo, Sushila and Soni Kumari are among those who have completed their training and are waiting for their turn. Sonn they will be seen driving the train.

Suman seemed enthusiastic before driving the train as her childhood dream was about to come true. She said that when she was small, she used to think of driving the train and told her father about it. Her father used to laugh a lot on her conversation.


Suman said that after her father’s death, her mother took care of the family. Suman’s mother used to get annoyed with her whenever she told her that she wants to drive a train but later agreed with her decision.

In the meanwhile, the applications for assistantLoco Pilot were invited by the railways department. Suman filled in the form from Ranchi. She appeared in the test and passed it

Suman has become the first woman Loco Pilot in the Chakradharpur railways department. She drove the freight train to Tatanagar. Suman has proved that women are not behind men in any field. Becoming a loco pilot is no easy task to do and that too of a goods train is even tougher. Suman is hard working as well as a brave girl.
