KSRTC bus driver speaking on mobile phone while driving

Karnataka police have decided to book cases against KSRTC drivers for traffic violation. This decision has been made based on the preliminary enquiry into the Hunsur accident where it was found that KSRTC bus driver Sadashiva while overtaking a vehicle rammed into the oncoming truck head-on.

SP Ravi D Channannavar who participated in the phone-in-programme organized by Vijaya Karnataka on Thursday said that like general public who will be fined for traffic violations, KSRTC bus drivers too should be held responsible for rash and negligent driving, drunk and drive and other violations which cause hardship to people.

Channannavar, who received various calls about KSRTC bus drivers for reckless driving, replied that the police department will undertake a continuous drive to check violations from drivers.

“The KSRTC will suspend drivers who are caught violating rules three times. Police will catch such drivers, issue notice and impose fine on them,” he said. He added that the department will take up a survey of roads in the district to find black spots. “We will take accident data of five years and find out accident zones. We will discuss with the local bodies and take up road development works like erecting dividers, speed breakers, cat eyes, signals and others based on the need. The local bodies will fund the work,” he said.

Channannavar also said that he has discussed with the deputy commissioner, KSRTC divisional commissioner and the RTO authorities over holding workshops for KSRTC staff over traffic rules and regulations. “We have taken up massive programmes to reduce the number road accidents which is around 6,000, including minor accidents, to around 400 cases,” he said.
