Thirunelli Maha Vishnu temple is located around 65 KM from Sultan Bathery. It took us more than 2 hours to cover this distance. The first 15 KM, the road condition was bad. But the drive is interesting as it passes through very scenic places. The temple is at an altitude of about 900m in a valley surrounded by mountains and beautiful forests. We have spotted a few wild animals like elephants & deers on our return journey. Overall it was a thrilling experience.

Thirunelli Temple is the only temple in the world where the devotees can perform all the rituals related to one’s life, starting from birth to death and life after death. It is one of the most ancient temples in Kerala. It is believed that here the prathishta of Lord Vishnu was performed by Lord Brahma. It is also known as ”Sahyamala Kshetram” and ”Kashi of the South”.

Thirunelly village can be accessed from Mananthavady or Kalpetta. The Periya ghat road connects Mananthavady to Kannur and Thalassery. The Thamarassery mountain road connects Calicut with Kalpetta. The Kuttiady mountain road connects Vatakara with Kalpetta and Mananthavady. The Palchuram mountain road connects Kannur and Iritty with Mananthavady. The road from Nilambur to Ooty is also connected to Wayanad through the village of Meppadi.

Pakshi Pathalam is a trekking site some seven kilometers from Thirunelli temple near Kattikkkulam. There is an ancient cave on the hillock with plenty of birds.
