BMW 760 Li High Security: Meet PM Narendra Modi’s set of four wheels

The Prime Minister of India has been travelling the world over in the Air India One private aircraft but when it comes to travelling around in India, he uses a BMW 760Li which is a tank disguised as a limousine.

Although he preaches ‘Make in India’ he cannot travel in any other indigenous made car as the choice of the car rests with the SPG (Special Protection Group) which has certain prescribed standards for safety and security of the cars that are going to ferry the PM. The same vehicle was also used by his predecessor Manmohan Singh.

Coming back to the car itself, the BMW 7 Series that our Prime Minister drives around is a highly secured armour clad luxury mobile, which sports a V12 engine churning out 546 PS of peek power and can do a 0 – 100 kmph sprint is 6.2 sec and has a top speed of 210 kmph. This car is compliant with a VR7 grade of ballistic protection and parts of it comply with a higher VR9 grade of protection as well. Its cabin can turn into a gas-safe chamber in case of a gas attack and is also equipped with a back-up oxygen tank.

As for other super safety features this car has a self-sealing fuel tank that cannot explode in any circumstances. Also on board, similar to Obama’s car, is a fire-fighting system, emergency exit and thick bullet-proof windows.  It also has armour plates beneath to withstand mines and bombs and run flat tyres which work for several kilometres. The car also possesses advanced heat sensors to provide protection from bombs and missiles. Modi’s BMW is considerably lighter than Obama’s Cadillac, making it easier to maneuver. However, the Cadillac One generates greater momentum.

Before joining office Mr. Modi was majorly seen driving around in his armoured Mahindra Scorpio, which was so dear to him that for his swearing-in ceremony, he was driven to Rashtrapati Bhawan in his special Scorpio.

As for the Scorpio it came with a bulletproof kit, which was designed to guard its occupants if shots were fired from a 9mm pistol at distance of 5m at 90 degree angle of attack. Also, the fuel tank with fire suppression material would avoid a fire, and the special glasses could withstand a 9mm pistol attack. The kit also included a real time tracking device.
