5 upcoming big metro projects; stations, corridor details here

Upcoming metro projects in India: With the successful running of Delhi Metro and Kolkata Metro, several metro networks have been launched across the country over the last few years. Not only does the metro network help decongest the busy city roads but also provides an environmental friendly mode of transport, thereby curbing the pollution level. There are also several other benefits of using the metro network for travelling like reduced travel time, cost-effectiveness, safety and convenience. Some of the newly launched metro networks include Ahmedabad Metro and Nagpur Metro. We take a look at 5 upcoming major metro projects in India:

1) Kanpur Metro: The Kanpur Metro, which has been recently approved by the Cabinet will comprise of two corridors- IIT to Naubasta corridor and Agriculture University to Barra-8 corridor. The 23.785 km long Naubasa corridor will consist of 14 elevated stations and 8 underground stations. The 8.60 km long Agriculture University to Barra-8 corridor will consist of 4 elevated and 4 underground stations. The entire project, which will be completed in 5 years will cost around Rs 11,076.48 crore.

2) Agra Metro: Another project, which has been recently approved by the Cabinet- Agra Metro will also have two corridors- Sikandra to Taj East Gate corridor and Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar corridor. The 14 km long Sikandra to Taj East Gate corridor will consist of 6 elevated and 7 underground stations. While, the entirely elevated 15.40 km long Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar corridor will consist of 14 stations. The Agra Metro project will be completed in 5 years at a cost of around Rs 8,379.62 crore.

3) Surat Metro: The Surat Metro rail project has been recently shown the green signal by the government of India. With a total length of 40.35 km, the Surat Metro will be provided with two corridors- 21.61 km long Sarthana to Dream city line and 18.74 km long Bhesan to Saroli line. The Sarthana to Dream city corridor will cover 20 stations, while the Bhesan to Saroli corridor will consist of 18 stations. Both the corridors are likely to have Multimodal Integration, Intermediate Public Transport (IPT), feeder network of bus and Non-Motorized Transport (NMT). The project, worth around Rs 12,020.32 crore will be completed in 5 years.

4) Pune Metro: The Pune Metro rail project comprises of 3 corridors- PCMC to Swargate corridor, Vanaz – Ramwadi corridor and the third corridor connecting IT hub of Hinjewadi to the Pune city centre at Shivajinagar. The 16.589 km long PCMC to Swargate corridor will consist of 5 underground and 9 elevated stations, while the 14.665 km long Vanaz – Ramwadi corridor will consist of 16 elevated stations. The IT hub to Pune city centre, which got the government’s approval last year will be 23.3 km long. All three corridors are being developed at a cost of around Rs 20,000 crore. The Pune Metro is likely to commence operations from 2021.

5) Navi Mumbai Metro: The Navi Mumbai Metro project is being developed by CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation) in three phases: Belapur to Pendhar stretch in phase 1, MIDC to Khandeshwar stretch in phase 2 and interconnection between Pendhar and MIDC under phase 3. With 20 metro stations in total, the 11.10 km long Belapur to Pendhar section will consist of 11 stations, 10.30 km long MIDC to Khandeshwar section will cover 8 stations, and 2 km long Pendhar and MIDC section will have 1 station. The Navi Mumbai Metro is likely to start operations by 2020.
