In a novel tourism project, the state is planning to introduce twenty-seater Shikaras in the backwaters stretching from Kadinamkulam to Akathumuri.

Minister Kadakampally Surendran said that the three hour boating service will have a boat terminal at Kadinamkulam and pass via Perumathura, Anjuthengu, Kayikkara and Ponnumthuruth. Eateries and restrooms along with other facilities will be provided at the scenic Panayilkadavu.

Floating jettys will be established at Perumathura, Anjuthengu, Kayikkara, Ponnumthuruth, Panayilkadavu and Akathumuri. The project will be under the charge of DTPC and the houseboats will also be allowed to service the route. Bio toilets will be mandatory in the boats and sewage treatment will be a priority.

The minister expressed hope that the project will raise the tourism potential of the capital. The tourists will have mountains, beaches and now backwaters too to enjoy. The project is expected to draw tourists including foreigners and has been suggested for extension till the Kappil beach.
