The stench emanating from the waste accumulated in the Amayizhanjan canal is what welcomes around 200 KSRTC employees when they come for work at the depot in Thampanoor. Though it was recently cleaned as part of the flood mitigation project ‘Operation Anantha’ of the district administration, waste has accumulated again in the canal.Half-a-kilometre stretch of the canal is covered with waste. It flows beside the garage of the depot and the depot employees have to cross an iron bridge over the canal to reach the office.

The waste accumulated in the canal is mostly disposable glass and plates, plastic covers filled with waste and even tube lights, which has partly blocked the flow of water. The KSRTC staff at the depot said that it is very difficult to work in the depot because of the stench emanating from the canal and mosquitoes.”It is horrible to cross the canal every day.

The employees are finding it hard to work bearing the stench and also due to the mosquitoes and rats,” said C Udaya Kumar, district transport officer, Thiruvananthapuram central.,”Within a week the canal was partly blocked because of the waste being dumped into it, while it took month-long effort to clean the canal. Constructing fences on the sides of the canal and covering it with concrete slabs can be a solution.
