The overflowing drains were already causing enough trouble for the KSRTC staff at Pappanamcode depot. Now, the employees are facing a new threat in the form of snakes. Recently, around eight snakes were found at various spots in the depot.

The snakes had made old vehicles dumped in the depot their breeding hub. Creepers have covered most parts of the vehicles. Now, with the onset of monsoon, the snakes have come out of their abodes and have entered the workshop and parking area of the depot. The depot staff often spot snakes, some alive and some crushed under bus tyres. Recently a snake was spotted in a tool box by a mechanic and another one was found on the bike of a staff, who only noticed the snake after it had crawled on to his leg.

“The staff are in apprehension that only after something unfortunate happens that concerned officials will pay heed to the issue,” said Ratheesh Kumar, mechanic at the depot. The staff also allege that several requests were sent to the welfare officer who is in-charge of the deport maintenance but no steps have been initiated in this regard.

Meanwhile, according to welfare officer Sheela J, it is because of the procedural delay and fund crunch that cleaning work of the drains in the depot is delayed. “The unit officials of KSRTC depot were asked to submit an estimate of the cleaning work after inviting quotations. A fund of Rs 26,000 has been requested from finance department for the work. But the clearing of the creepers that have spread over the depot is the responsibility of the unit officer,” said Sheela.
