Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa announced that transport corporations will operate 12,624 special bus services across the state between January 9 and 14 in view of the Pongal festival.

“The same number of buses will be operated to facilitate the commuters to return to their destinations after Pongal, between January 15 and 19,” she said in a statement.

At least 4,682 buses will be operated from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu. A many as 482 buses will be operated on January 9, 504 on January 10, 365 on January 11, 539 on January 12, 1,345 on January 13, and 1,447 on January 14. That apart, 7,942 special buses will be operated from important towns during the same period.

 The Metropolitan Transport Corporation will operate 600 special services during the same days in Chennai. In addition, 200 special buses will be operated to tourist destinations like Marina Beach, Vandalur zoo and Mahabalipuram to manage the crowd on the Kanum Pongal day.
In a bid to facilitate easy booking, the transport department will set up 25 special advance booking centres at CMBT in Koyambedu. Those who travel more than 300km can avail online booking on www.tnstc.in.

Jayalalithaa said officials had been directed to ensure that private bus operators collect the fixed fare. “If they collect more, people can prefer complaints to State Express Transport Corporation’s complaint cell — 044-24794709. I have instructed the officials to take strong action on the complaints,” the chief minister said.
