Five people were killed and a child critically injured when a speeding Volvo bus of Kallada Travels rammed a car in which they were travelling on NH 47 at Nangiyarkulangara near Haripad on Thursday noon.
Police identified the dead as Muhammad Kunju (65), Mariyumma Kunju (60), her daughter-in-law Zameena Jahad (30), Nafeeza Kunju (60) and car driver Abdul Latheef (45). Zameena’s daughter Nazwa (4) has been admitted to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Haripad police said the accident took place around 12.30pm. The Thiruvananthapuram-bound bus, coming from Bangalore, was trying to overtake a KSRTC bus when it collided with the Maruti 800 car. Eyewitnesses said the car fell into a nearby gorge on the impact of the collision and police and rescue workers had a tough time in extricating the victims. None of the passengers in the bus, owned by Kallada Travels group, was hurt in the accident.
