The city Corporation has put forward a proposal to convert Erumakuzhi along the Attakulangara bypass into a bus terminal for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

The proposal was made by Chairman of the Town Planning Committee R. Satheesh Kumar at a meeting of road sector stakeholders convened by State Police Chief Lokanath Behera here on Saturday. Mr. Satheesh, who represented Mayor V.K. Prasanth, who is indisposed, said shifting the bus terminal from East Fort to Eramakuzhi would decongest the busy corridor.

Bus terminal construction

The move from the civic body has come at a time when the proposal by TRIDA to construct a bus terminal and shopping complex by acquiring land from Central High School, Attakulangara, has failed to take off because of opposition from environmentalists and the alumni of the school.

The efforts of the district administration and the police to streamline traffic along the East Fort-Pazhavangady stretch by redesigning bus bays and restricting movement through medians has not yielded results.

A garbage dump had sprung up at Erumakuzhi after the Vilappilsala plant closure. It was closed down following opposition from locals. Aerobic bins for waste treatment were set up by the civic body there.

The Corporation has also asked the SPC to ensure that traffic signals are switched on from 6 a.m. in view of the heavy traffic and vehicles ferrying schoolchildren hitting the roads early.

Relocating the bus stop in front of the St. Joseph’s Cathedral to reduce traffic congestion was also mooted by Mr. Satheesh Kumar. The civic body has demanded that heavy vehicles in the school zone be restricted during peak hours and that the school zone be made one-way.
