A State Disaster Response Force will be set up with popular participation, Minister for Revenue E. Chandrasekharan said in the Assembly on Monday.

The idea is to sensitize the public to disaster response and create better awareness of the proper response during a disaster. Under the Cyclone response scheme, efforts were on to set up 27 permanent rehabilitation camps in the coastal areas. A disaster mitigation project for the State was on the anvil, with UNDP assistance, he informed the House.

The KSRTC will newly appoint 1,562 persons in the current year, including 255 drivers and 823 conductors, Minister for Transport A..K. Saseendran said in the Assembly Under non-joining duty vacancies, 288 junior assistant, 10 assistant store-keepers and 86 mechanics will also be appointed.
