The hartal was called by the umbrella organization for dalits, which has a strong presence in the district, in protest of the atrocities by the ruling CPM and its students wing, SFI. The trigger was the alleged attack on Vivek Kumaran, a dalit M Phil student of Mahatma Gandhi University, by four SFI activists last week.
