Bus timings to be rescheduled in Kerala

An expert committee of the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has recommended complete overhaul of bus timings across the state by taking into consideration the frequent traffic blocks and poor condition of the roads. The committee has submitted a report regarding this.

Currently, the bus timings are decided according to the kilometers covered in a trip. The buses often reach their destination late as they have to cover numerous bus stops, pass through roads full of potholes and survive long traffic jams in a single trip. These problems often lead to overspeeding and competition among private buses.

The committee has recommended to increase the duration of the trip of all bus services in the hill stations by 25 percent. Town buses should be given an extra time of 4 minutes for every 20 kilometres and other buses should get 2 minutes extra trip time by considering the traffic block, railway gates and signal points.

The trip distance of ordinary buses of private groups should be limited to a stretch of 75 kilometres, according to the report. Meanwhile it has been alleged that the new recommendation will help private buses to focus their services to routes which are more profitable.

It is feared the the recommendations will affect the services of over 2000 ordinary KSRTC buses.
