Mahe, sandwiched between the coastal areas of Kannur and Kozhikode districts, has a total area of 9 sq. km and total population of around 42,000. It is known as tipplers’ paradise because the small enclave has 64 liquor outlets and dozens of bars.

Though Kerala’s Excise check-posts regularly monitor traffic on the National Highway towards Kannur and Kozhikode, the residents say liquor smuggling using vehicles is rampant here. Migrant workers are often hired to smuggle liquor.

Bus employees including KSRTC also helps for liquor transport from Mahe to Kannur
