Thiruvananthapuram: The Motor Vehicles Department has formed a new mufti squad to nab people who use mobile phone while driving. Special squad members under Transport Commissioner have been employed for the operation.
The practice of using phone while driving has become so rampant even in busy roads. The special squad in mufti will mainly target the people who tend to use phone in the absence of men in uniform.
The squad who have been deployed in various parts of the city will detect the violators and film them. As many as 93 people have been nabbed by the squad in the city in the operation held recently.
The vehicle owner will first get the notice about the violation. The driver’s licence will be suspended subsequently for six months. If the person is caught driving a vehicle during this period, his or her licence will be cancelled.
If the person fails to appear before the MVD officials on receiving the notice, legal action will be initiated.
