Madya Seva Samithi’s protest to protect liquor outlet

Kottayam: In a rare incident of its kind in the state, the tipplers took out a rally here on Tuesday seeking initiatives to protect a liquor outlet at Adityapuram here.

Following the Supreme Court order on liquor outlets, the Bevco authorities had decided to shift the outlet that functioned at Kaduthuruthy town to a nearby area Adityapuram.

 

In this regard, they located a building and also set up basic facilities including bill counters.

At this juncture, the political outfits and resident associations came out with protests. As rumours spread that the shop would again be shifted, the tipplers took out the march under the aegis of ‘Madya Seva Samithi.’

Since ganja and illicit liquor are available across the state in plenty, a government outlet selling quality liquor is a must here, they opined.

On information, Kaduthuruthy sub inspector and two civil police officers had reached the spot. However, the strength of the protestors forced them to seek assistance. Accordingly, police personnel from Vaikom and Kuravilangad stations.

On being directed by Kaduthuruthy sub inspector Rajeev, the tipplers, who were singing songs and shouting, stopped 50 metres away from the outlet.

Talking to mathrubhumi.com, the SI said the march was peaceful.
