The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has invited tender for licence to display advertisement on KSRTC buses, bus stations, bus shelters and certain specified plots to install static hoardings and electronic hoardings.

The authorities hope to fetch a non-operation income of at least Rs 6 crore by leasing out the spaces for advertisement purposes.

At the same time, authorities have made it clear that advertisements which offend any law or religious feelings of any sect of people, public morality or defamatory or the display of which is prohibited by any lawful authority will not find place in the leased space.”There were a few incidents in which KSRTC came under pressure following an unconventional advertisement of a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction and another advertisement carrying a popular catchword of a liquor brand.

A few film posters fixed on KSRTC buses had also received criticism following obscenity in it. We have decided to avoid these types of criticisms this time and will give strict directions to the contractors who win tender. The clause is already included in the tender invitation document and the same will be included in the tender allotment documents, too,” said a senior officer.

The tender for advertisements on buses will be awarded for two years, while tender for advertisements on bus stations, shelters, unused spaces, etc. will be awarded for three years. Last time, KSRTC authorities had fetched Rs 2.5 crore from advertisements on buses and Rs 3.05 crore from ads on unmovable properties.

At the same time, authorities have begun primary discussion to install LCD screens inside select buses (as done in the buses of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) in Mumbai metro). . “The two aims behind installing LCD screens are informing passengers about bus journey details including next stop and time, and additional revenue in form of advertisement. The LCD screens will be installed once we introduce GPS system in buses, a project which is already in place,” the officer added.

Newly released vehicles after December 31, 2012 will not be given for the display of advertisement except those for replacement. Advertisements on window glasses, emergency glasses and driver cabin will also be not allowed. Authorities have also not included Volvo buses introduced under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) in the list of buses included in the tender.
