Snakes are our perennial neighbors and a persistent headache. Generally harmless, they can get defensive if encountered in tricky situations. The number of snake bite causalities are on the rise and so is the workload of Vava Suresh, the snake expert. While city dwellers are discouraged from farming on their homesteads due to this, more and more snakes are slithering into homes and gardens posing a direct threat to domestic life.

The primer in managing snakes would be to become aware of the different varieties of snakes in any location. The snakes living in any area would differ with the geography and topography. The snakes found in the gardens (the more dangerous ones) will not be the ones slithering into the bedrooms. Keeping the surroundings clean is a primary element in snake management. There should be no waterlogging, overgrown garden creepers and bushes or loose scrap which may house the snakes.

Another attractive spot in the domestic sphere is the pet kennels and pens. The snakes may come for the leftover food or maybe looking for rats that feed on such food. Either way keeping the pet spaces clean will make the homesteads safer.

It is also advisable to fill holes and burrows and erect protection fences around yards and homes to keep the snakes away. Good care of the smaller things in life can effectively make life safer.
