Home guard abusing women in road

The home guard’s act in broad daylight was so much on the sly that even his ‘victims’ didn’t suspect that a man in uniform would deliberately try to outrage their modesty. Though taken aback, most of them ignored his inappropriate touch as an accident that often occurs in crowded streets. Unknown to home guard Sivakumar, an unidentified person was noticing his repeated ‘accidental’ and inappropriate touching of passing and even girls.

The short video clip soon went viral, sparking indignation at the home guard’s action. The man in video, police later identified as Sivakumar, 58, of Elamakkara, was seen sauntering up the road, his arm brushing against the posterior of any woman passing in the opposite direction in the crowded area. Some women were seen looking back at him, but none complained, apparently believing it might be an accidental touch. Sivakumar, however, continued strolling without even looking back at the women. Once the video went viral on social media, Thevara police registered a suo motu case and arrested Sivakumar on Wednesday. Police said the man had been working as a home guard since 2016.

“Based on the video, we have registered a case invoking the Section 354 of IPC (assault or using criminal force to any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will there by outrage her modesty) and sections 7 and 8 of the Pocso Act. The video showed Sivakumar, who touched the women (seemingly with malicious intention), didn’t even spare girls,” police said.

The city traffic police, meanwhile, relieved him of duties and returned him to the fire and rescue services department. Home guards have been recruited as temporary staff. “We have relieved him. We have also submitted a report to the city police commissioner. It is learnt that the commissioner has recommended the fire and rescue department to remove him,” M A Nazeer, assistant commissioner of police, Traffic West, said. Sivakumar was later produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate court.
