Nearly 70 years after independence, can you imagine a village just 40 km from Nagpur so cut off that start of bus service sets off delirious celebrations? This is the reality of Khairi Sita, a small tribal hamlet off Amravati Road. When Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation connected this village with its bus service on Monday, the villagers began a spontaneous celebration and welcomed the bus into village with music and dance. They sprayed gulaal in celebration and held a small function to welcome the service. The villagers were elated at having public transport facility after years of hardship.

The women, deprived of education for want of safe transport, were seen dancing in joy, singing and celebrating the development. Before this the 400 villagers of Khairi Sita faced a lot of trouble because of lack of connectivity. The village has only a primary school. So the worst affected were the children who had to walk 4km one way through a dense forest to a nearby village to board a bus to attend high school (from sixth standard onwards) which was tiring for children.
