Buses in Kerala will have to install GPS (Global Positioning System) facilities at the latest by March this year.  Working on 3G communication technology, buses that do not install GPS systems, including KSRTC buses, will not be allowed to ply the roads after March 31. This innovative addition is supposed to make journeys safer, reducing accidents and enabling real-time geographical and speed tracking.

The government expects an expenditure of around Rs. 7 crores for the project. Tenders have been invited for the selection of companies for the supply of  GPS devices. There are over 16000 private buses on the Kerala roads in addition to the 5000 state-run KSRTC buses. The phase wise program will see that private buses getting their GPS systems active before the KSRTC buses. Soon lorries and cars will also come under consideration for compulsory GPS tracking.

The new system will help map the speed and route of every bus, recording the details real-time on the servers. The usage of  Google maps is also under consideration and is expected to cost Rs.3 crores. Tomin J Thachankerry, Transport Commissioner,  told  they are working rapidly towards implementing the new policy in full strength before the  31 of March.
