Commuters using the services of long-distance KSRTC buses like the one to Bangalore or to Sabarimala during pilgrimage season could often find drivers stopping frequently for refreshments during odd hours despite running behind schedule.

With such complaints about the long-distance buses of KSRTC getting more frequent as of late, the authorities have issued a circular to all depots asking the drivers not to halt the buses unnecessarily.

“After the journey starts, the bus shouldn’t be halted for break for a minimum two hours. The crew could stop for breakfast between 9 am and 10 am, lunch between 1 pm and 2 pm and dinner between 8 pm and 9 pm,” the circular says.

Another important directive is with regard to the hygiene of the restaurants. “The crew should ensure the quality of the food and that fair price is charged. Any complaints by the commuters in this regard would be viewed seriously inviting penal action,” it said.

There are many complaints of the buses being stopped on particular hotels who allegedly provide money and free food to the crew, said a senior KSRTC official.
