Minister for Transport Aryadan Mohammed inaugurated a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) sub-depot at Chemmattamvayal here on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Mohammed underscored the need for joint efforts to save and sustain the loss-making public sector transport unit. The KSRTC, due to its heavy financial obligation, has been incurring loss over the years and the average monthly loss has now touched Rs.80 crore.

Efforts are needed to bring down the mounting losses, he said..

He said the KSRTC could open a sub-depot here due to joint efforts of all sections of society and the liberal fund allocation made by local MP P. Karunakaran, CPI Rajya Sabha member M.P. Achuthan, and the former Hosdurg MLA Pallipram Balan.

57 services

The depot would operate 57 services by drawing buses from the neighbouring Kasaragod, Payyannur, and Kannur depots. The services would commence on Monday, a senior official said.

The depot with a three-storey building complex is located on 2.25-acre revenue land at Chemmattamvayal locality close to the National Highway.

A few long-distance services, including to Karnataka, are expected to begin operations soon.
