In a bid to improve transport facilities and find increased revenue sources, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation has launched a novel initiative, ‘Jana Sowhridam’, under which inspectors will be deputed at 160 identified main junctions across the state to ensure that all the buses stop at these points and pick commuters.

“One of the main complaints is that KSRTC buses don’t halt at important junctions during peak hours. Hence, the inspectors will ensure that the bus stops at these points on the main routes between Parassala in the south and Kasargode in the north,” said Vigilance Officer Vasundharan Pillai, who is in charge of the measure.

Another duty of the inspectors is to ensure that there are no parallel services, one of the main reasons for low revenue. “Many a time, two buses plying parallel to the same destination will result in one of them running with vacant seats. In such situations, the inspectors usually ask one of the buses to halt for a few minutes before resuming the trip, so that it would also get a fair collection,” the officer said.

The initiative will be implemented on an experimental basis till April 10. “The inspectors would work from 7.30 am to 10.30 am and from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm daily. We’ll also make a note of passenger response“, he said.
