he inauguration of the construction work of the KSRTC terminal at Enchakkal was an election stunt, it seems. Though the inauguration of the construction work was conducted last month, nothing has gone forward from there.

The delay in preparing the estimate has led to another hurdle in the form of election notification. “As the election has notified, we cannot announce the tenders for the next two months. The construction work can begin only after the tenders are issued,” said chief engineer R Indu.

The Thampanoor terminal was inaugurated four years after the foundation laying ceremony, which was held in 2010. Proposed almost a decade ago, the construction work of the terminal at Enchakkal was inaugurated by minister for transport Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on February 25.

Construction work of the terminal was inaugurated even before preparing the estimate of the project with the assembly elections in sight. KSRTC had not begun any civil works on the 5.75 acres allotted by agriculture department in 2013.
KSRTC has received the estimate of the project from the assigned agency, which is now handed over to Govt Engineering College, Thiruvananthapuram, for structural verification. “We hope to receive the estimate in about two months. The accurate estimate amount can only be declared after verification, as there may be some correction,” added R Indu.

The bus-terminal-cum-shopping complex planned on 5.75 acres consists of a two-storey building and a bus parking yard. The area now being used as KSRTC operating centre for JNNURM buses, will serve as the bus station for of all long distance services originating from Thiruvananthapuram.
