A bus conductor’s dream trip to limelight through ‘Dhe Chef’

Lijo is a star today in Elanthikkara, his home village in Thrissur. It was a dream run for this young bus conductor, who drove into the limelight through ‘Dhe Chef’ cookery reality show and won the title aired by Mazhavil Manorama. The whole Malayalee world today recognises Lijo, as he basks in the newly dawned glory through the popular show. A jubilant Lijo opens up…

Walking down the memory lane, how do you recall your childhood days?

There were some small-time tea shops on our way to the river where we took our daily bath. As we walked past these tea shops, we were frequently tantalised by the aroma of those ambrosial snacks such as ‘Ethakaai Appam’ and ‘bonda’. Yummy and mouthwatering! (a burst of laughter). Unable to resist, I constantly brought snacks from these shops and ate aplenty without my mom’s knowledge.

Gradually I took a liking to cooking. Sensing my passion, my father enrolled me in some culinary courses; but I could not continue my studies as my father passed away while I was studying in Class X. Naturally, I had to take up the financial burdens of my family.

Even from my childhood, I had a habit of pondering on the recipe of every food that was served on my plate. After completing my studies, I worked in a hotel as a trainee. I learned the basics of culinary art while there. Later, I left that job and took up the role of a bus conductor. But, my passion lured me back, and I quit that job to start up a restaurant. Things did not go well as I met with an accident. Nonetheless, I had managed to acquire some valuable tips from that short-lived venture.

Was ‘Dhe Chef’ your first media encounter?

No. My first encounter with media was when I did a reality show for Kaumudi. I had won the contest then. ‘Dhe Chef’ is my second major show.

How was your experience at Dhe Chef?

After being selected to Dhe Chef, I found that I am more and more recognised by the public. I am very happy about it. I could also learn a lot many varieties of food, which I had never even heard of. I cherish many unforgettable experiences during my episodes at Dhe Chef.

What are you ambition for future?

Ayyo! (laughs). I wish to start up a restaurant in our place. And the name would be ‘Dhe Chef!’
