The emerald-fringed “Island of Crows” has been listed in National Geographic’s ‘Around the World in 24 Hours’, a photographic tour of travel-worthy spots across the world.

The charisma of the small island with sea green waters, lush coconut groves and absence of tarred roads, has been captured by the magazine photographers during the time of dusk when “the shadows lengthen and the sky shifts from pale blue to sapphire.

This island, which is located near the ancient port city of Kochi, can be reached from the main land only through waterways or boats. The quiet island that it is, Vembanad lake also lines its circumference, often making itself a haven for birdwatchers.

The reason why Kakkathuruthu was listed can be understood by seeing the lush coconut groves, non-tarred roads and the landscape they create when when captured by photographers at dusk, when the shadows elongate and the sky shifts from pale blue to sapphire.

Describing it graphically, the magazine says that the sunset in Kerala is accompanied by a series of rituals-women clad in sarees heading homes in skiffs, fishermen lighting lamps ane casting nets into lagoons and bats swooping across the horizon snapping up moths. NatGeo Expeditions further remarks, “If the dawn is awakening and daytime illumination, then twilight is transcendence, a final burst of vitality before darkness falls.”
