Insecurity is a thing of the past for woman passengers in city buses. For, APSRTC has decided to partition buses to separate the fairer sex from their male counterparts.

According to the new safety initiative, women’s seats will be separated from men’s by an aluminium mesh. The first four rows of seats will be allotted for women who will have to enter and alight the buses through a sliding door.

The new initiative, taken up as a pilot project in 25 ordinary buses, was launched by transport minister Sidda Raghava Rao at Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) on Saturday. Later, similar arrangement will be made in 350 city buses each in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.

Such a measure for women passengers was first introduced in Hyderabad in 2014 to make the passage more comfortable and safe. It was an instant hit.

Speaking after launching the new system, the transport minister said, “We have taken the decision to partition the buses to put an end to harassment faced by women,” the transport minister said.
