Passengers can now track the movement of city buses, their arrival at a particular point and route schedule, with the RTC launching its Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) on a pilot basis.

With a monitoring unit installed in the bus, the system makes announcements on bus stops.

It also sends signals to the data centre, and based on the data, the speed of the bus is assessed by the server. There will be LED display boards at all bus stops in addition to surveillance cameras in buses.

The system will monitor 213 metro deluxe, metro express city services. The system will also be helpful for the corporation, as it will help it avoid bunching of buses, besides enabling it to monitor drivers’ performance, especially rash and negligent driving, skipping of bus stops, behaviour with passengers and delays on certain routes, said A. Koteswara Rao, Executive Director (IT) of APSRTC.

The system is almost similar to the one used in trains. And, there are plans to introduce similar system in long distance services, Mr. Rao added.
