Elephant sightings have gone up in the Anakatti-Thadagam  inter-state road along the border with Tamil Nadu. The heat and lack of water and food are driving the elephants to come down to the habitations and the roads sometimes causing casualties and sometimes long traffic snarls. Locals have started avoiding night travel through this forlorn stretch fearing attacks. Even then five people have died in elephant attacks in the last one year in 24 Veerapandi Panchayath alone.

On Monday evening, an elephant held up traffic for over half an hour on the road near the Salim Ali National Park. While vehicles waited patiently the pachyderm just moved aside after some time allowing the vehicles to slide past quietly. Similar incident repeated on Tuesday  evening too.

Ganga Kalvaay, Bommankudi, Vellingirimala and Maruthamala areas have seen similar incidents in the near past. The trenches have been of little help and elephants have also been sighted often in the Anakatti- Agaly stretch.
